Three reasons why Japanese private companies must tackle Child Labour issue

1. Globalization and CSR

Japan is consuming numerous imported goods and Japanese private companies are producing and providing goods and services globally. In those situations, there is high possibility that private companies are involved in Child Labour through their business. According to Ten Principles for Global Compact by United Nations, “The effective abolition of child labour” is clearly indicated and Child Labour has been regarded as one of the company’s social responsibilities these days. In EU, Fair Trade which guarantees the consideration of both environment and human rights has been spread, and companies are also introducing Fair Trade in their business activities. In Japan, CSR activities are mainly regarded as for social contributions. However there is a new idea, which solve global and social issues combined with business strategy to enhance competitiveness, has been coming up.

2. Risk of human rights and labour, and supply chain management

The increasing numbers of partner companies from EU are requesting Japanese companies to comply with international standards such as SA8000, which focus on social aspects such as human rights and labour issues in its supply chain in global market. Unfortunately, most Japanese companies are much far behind in this field compared to multinational companies in other developed countries. Once incident of child labour is disclosed in certain product’s supply chain by media, it is no doubt that the company brand value will be severely damaged. For these reasons, and as Japanese consumers are increasingly keen on food safety and environment, Japanese companies that are expanding their business worldwide must try harder to understand and improve the traceability including production process of their raw materials within supply chain management.

3. Contribution to the future of children and global sustainability

Child Labour deprives children from their opportunity for education and it causes vicious cycle of poverty over the generations. Also, it is crucial to tackle Child Labour in order to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other goals related to global issues. Since Japanese economy depends on global markets, sustainable future society largely results from secure and safe production in the world and deprivation of education will endanger sustainable economy in the country. In addition, Child Labour violates child rights and deprives brilliant future from them. In order to protect the future for children and solve child labour issuses, we need to cooperate with various stakeholders such as companies and trade unions.
